There are currently four "post-docs" or postdoctoral fellows at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, all working under the mentorship of a faculty member (a fifth, Fulbright Scholar Patricia Prado from Spain, will arrive in September to work with Dr. Ken Heck. (read more)

Dr. Monty Graham, Dr. Ruth Carmichael and PhD student Isabella D'Ambra have joined scientists from Providence College, RI; the Biological Station of Piran, Slovenia; the Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography of Dubrovnik, Croatia; and the INIDEP (Mar del Plata, Argentina) in a research effort carried out in the National Park of Mljet (Croatia). The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a partner in Northern Gulf Institute (NGI), a NOAA-funded Cooperative Institute which has as one of its goals, the development and support of high-impact regional education programs. To accomplish this goal, NGI has supported a number of education opportunities at DISL, long recognized for their educational programs. This summer, NGI has supported five undergraduate interns who are working with DISL research faculty on projects under the four NGI research themes. (read more)

Every summer, high school students from across the country attend the month-long Discovery Hall Summer Program at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. For the first time in the program's history Louisiana State University (LSU) sponsored a student with a scholarship in Coastal Engineering, and this year's recipient was Jennifer Blakely. (read more)

Dr. John Dindo and Lee Yokel have secured a NOAA Coastal Services Center grant for $790,000 to address the Implementation of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA) Environmental Education Priorities and Actions. The funding application was written on behalf of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources who requested DISL prepare the application for the State of Alabama. Six GOMA grants were issued to the five U.S. Gulf states, each addressing a specific action of the Alliance. (read more)
