Welcome to the "Sea Lab Skimmer!" This electronic newsletter is replacing our former publication "Tidings," and we hope you will enjoy learning about the different programs and activities of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in this format. There's always something happening here at the Sea Lab, and we hope to bring you frequent updates of the latest activities.

 

The George F. Crozier Estuarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

On a glorious, sunny day in April, a crowd of Sea Lab staff members stood in front of a covered sign in the Estuarium parking lot. Minutes before the opening of Discovery Day, the Sea Lab's Open House, the assembled group waited anxiously. "What's going on?" wondered former Sea Lab Director George Crozier, on hand to volunteer. Shoes for a Good Cause

Take a stroll next to the Sea Lab dorms some afternoon, and more than likely you'll happen upon a mountain of dirty shoes drying in the Alabama sun. Thousands of students every year participate in the Discovery Hall Program's field activities, including seining in the muddy, murky salt marshes of the island. While the students always return home, the shoes don't always share the same fate, depending on their condition. (READ MORE)

New exhibits at the Sea Lab and Estuarium

Thanks to a grant from the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, the Estuarium now has a new Marine Debris exhibit along the Living Marsh Boardwalk (READ MORE).

Going, going...gone green

The Sea Lab housekeeping staff is now 80% "green," thanks to their use of cleaning procedures and products that reduce impact on our environment and our health (READ MORE).
