Welcome to the "Sea Lab Skimmer!" This electronic newsletter is replacing our former publication "Tidings," and we hope you will enjoy learning about the different programs and activities of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab in this format. There's always something happening here at the Sea Lab, and we hope to bring you frequent updates of the latest activities.

 

Field Excursions for the Public - New Program

Kids can't have all the fun! The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is now offering a program of field excursions for the public, trips that were once reserved for school groups during the academic year. These "Sea Lab Summer Excursions" will explore the beaches and maritime forest of Dauphin Island and the muddy, fascinating salt marsh. (READ MORE)

Dauphin Island Sea Lab's New Executive Director Begins Job July 1, 2008

Dr. L. Scott Quackenbush, the recently appointed Executive Director of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, will begin his position at the Sea Lab on July 1, 2008. Interim Director Dr. John Dindo has been head of the Sea Lab since the retirement of Dr. George Crozier in December 2007, and will remain Chair of the Sea Lab's K-12, teacher and public outreach programs. Congratulations to Luciano Chiaverano (PhD student); Marcus Drymon (PhD student); Mairi Miller (M.S. student); and Allison Rellinger (M.S. student) for winning the University of South Alabama Marine Sciences Department's Nelson Awards. The Jaycees and the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo sponsor these awards, given to students whose research progress is outstanding. (READ MORE)

Captain David W. Yeager steps down as Mobile Bay NEP Director

After serving as Director for eight years, David W. Yeager will step down from the position at the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) on July 1, 2008. Yeager began his tenure in early 2000 after a highly successful 30-year career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps. A committee has been created to conduct a national search to identify candidates and recommend a selection for a new head of this important program. (READ MORE)

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is now an AMSTI Affiliate

AMSTI, the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative of the State Board of Education, aims to improve math and science teaching in Alabama so all students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for success in postsecondary studies and in the workforce. To accomplish this, AMSTI provides teachers with ongoing, grade and subject level professional development and the equipment and materials needed to teach math and science using hands-on, activity-based instruction at no cost to the school. AMSTI Sites provide initial training and support teachers in the classroom while AMSTI Affiliates provide additional opportunities for professional development. (READ MORE)

Dr.Heck

 

Dr. Ken Heck was named Adjunct Professor in the School of Plant Biology at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Dr. Heck has also been invited to present the plenary address at the Australian Marine Science Association's annual meeting next year in Adelaide, AU. (READ MORE)
